BERKELEY-TAIWAN FELLOWSHIPS

Silicon Valley Spirit of Innovation and Taiwanese Culture of Excellence

Berkeley-Taiwan Fellowships are elite entrepreneurial fellowships jointly hosted by UC Berkeley College of Engineering and Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan.


The Fellowship is under the LEAP@Berkeley program. Currently, two categories of Fellows accepted:

  1. Berkeley-Taiwan Biomedical (BTB) Fellowship, with focus on medical device entrepreneurship

  2. LEAP@Berkeley Academic Group Fellowship, with a focus on deep technology entrepreneurship

SCARLETT HO, MSC

2021-2022 BTB Fellow

Scarlett is a Visiting Scholar of Berkeley-Taiwan-Biomedical Fellowship, a joint program run by Taiwan Government and UC Berkeley.  Her research is on healthcare and dietary supplement, aiming to build up health monitoring and supplement ecosystem.  Prior to joining the fellowship, Scarlett was a Sr. Principal Product Development Manager in Dell, where she led engineering team to design servers for cloud, data center, and SMB solutions.  Previously, she was a Manager in HPE Server, leading a worldwide team which she built up from the scratch.

Scarlett is enthusiastic about women empowerment.  She was the Co-Chair of Women In Action ERG club in Dell and initiated Cool Connected Women club with Google, Facebook, Uber, Intel, Microsoft, etc. across IT industry.  Scarlett holds a MS in Material Science from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from National Taiwan University.

2020-2021 BTB Fellow

Ariel is a registered dietitian(TWN), an associated nutritionist (U.K.), and a Chevening scholar.  Her research and teaching focus on clinical nutrition, sustainable eating, and digital health. Her works for Delta, UCL, and ICDA on projects related to global health, sustainable diet, and behavior change.

2019-2020 BTB Fellow

As a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley, supported by the Berkeley-Taiwan Biomedical Fellowship Program (BTB) of MOST in Taiwan for one year, Dr. Jan is hosted by the Master Program of Translational Medicine (MTM) in Dept. Bioengineering and will be doing research on Venture Business of Digital Healthcare and MedTech Startups in the Bay area.

HUNG LO, MSC

2019-2020 LEAP Fellow

After graduated from the Department of Optoelectronics and Photonics at National Taiwan University, Mr. Lo entered in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company(TSMC) as an R&D integration engineer. Hung Lo currently co-works with one professor at the Department of EECS in UC Berkeley and researches on biotech for the athletes.

2018-2019 BTB Fellow

Dr. Li is a biomedical engineer whose career has combined academic research with product development and commercialization and has worked for the last twelve years on biomedical education, research, project management, platform establishing, device design, talent and startup team cultivation from clinical needs finding to fund raising, value chain connection, and ecosystem building up at southern Taiwan.

2018-2019 LEAP Fellow

Dr. Chao-Wei Huang’s recent research focuses on developing the on-site decision making platform for livestock industry. During his stay at Berkely, he has expertise in 3 dimensional microfluidic for fluid handling and bio-marker detection, as well as extensive knowledge of current demands and market niches on Agritech.

CHANG-YU LIN, PHD

2018-2019 LEAP Fellow

Dr. Chang-Yu Lin was an assistant professor at Chi-Nan University. His research focuses on the junctions of 2D material and its applications. He developed a multi-functional device with mechanical pressure detection and light-emitting functions in UC Berkeley. The detectors could be applied to the skin of robots and wearable devices.

2017-2018 BTB Fellow

Ray is the CEO of Longgood Inc, a Taiwanese tele-rehabilitation startup that has penetrated 60% of Taiwanese medical rehabilitation market. He has special interest in rehabilitation devices, and developed a rehabilitation robot under Prof. Ruzena Bajscy's HART Lab in UC Berkeley.

2017-2018 BTB Fellow

Trained as a neurologist and a physician-scientist, thanks to the Berkeley-Taiwan Biomedical (BTB) Fellowship, Dr. Jowy Tani was able to work with the teams from UC Berkeley, UCSF, and Stanford University to develop innovative medical devices. During his time in Silicon Valley, he worked on robotics, AI, and medical informatics projects.

Dr. Tani is currently serving as the CEO of Taipei Medical University Biomed Accelerator, Deputy Secretary-General of Taiwan Neurological Society, Assistant Professor of Taipei Medical University, and Deputy Director of Wan Fang Hospital Biomed Innovation Center.

2016-2017 BTB Fellow

Dr. Yi-Cheng Liu is a Researcher at Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan, specializing in optical coherence tomography, semiconductor optoelectronics, point-of-care device, ultrafast optics, and biophotonics. He is also serving as Biomedical Engineering Advisory Board at Cambridge Scholars Publishing of UK.

Junior professional focused on Precision Medicine, Regenerative Medicine, and Preventive Medicine with a demonstrated research background in the biotechnology. Skilled in Venture Development and Talent Inspiration. Ultimately to contribute to a healthy ecosystem for biotech entrepreneurship through Value-accumulating Culture.
